Image: M. Todd Bennett, a graduate of UGA's Ph.D. program in history (2001), has been named as one of just 28 NEH Public Scholars for 2017-2018. Bennett's NEH grant is for his book project entitled, "Howard Hughes, the CIA, and the Untold Story Behind Their Hunt for a Sunken Soviet Submarine." The book explores intelligence oversight and accountability though a narrative account of the covert 1974 CIA operation to use Howard Hughes’s ship Glomar Explorer to raise a sunken Soviet submarine. Bennett is an Associate Professor in the history department at East Carolina University in Greenville, North Carolina. His latest book, One World, Big Screen: Hollywood, the Allies, and World War II (2016) is available from UNC Press. The National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) is an independent federal agency created in 1965. It is one of the largest funders of humanities programs in the United States.
