Image: The Corbin Expulsion of 1919, posted from Black in Appalachia: Matt O'Neal, PHD Student at the University of Georgia tells the tale of how Corbin, Kentucky became a sundown town on October 30, 1919 with the forcible expulsion of the entire Black population. During the 100 years that followed, the city became synonymous with being an unwelcoming and hostile place for African Americans. Black in Appalachia explores the roots of African-American influence on the history and culture of Appalachia through documentaries, research, local narratives, public engagement and exhibition. This project aims to raise the visibility and contributions of the Black communities of the Mountain South and is a special project of East Tennessee PBS.
